3 Things You Need To Know About Becoming A Foster Parent

Steven Caldwell

Wanting to become a foster parent is an incredibly selfless thing. There are so many children out there who need a good home, and if you are willing to open your home to these children, you can save a life and feel the joy that comes from bringing a child into your life. However, there are some things that you need to know about foster care. Here are some things you should be prepared for.

1. A Home Evaluation

Before you can even consider becoming a foster parent you will need to have your home evaluated with a home visit. There will be a licensed social worker or someone with the state who will come to the home and go through to check that everything is safe and satisfactory. Additionally, during this time they will interview you and perhaps even other members of your family to see if you are fit to bringing a child into the house. Even if you already have children in your home, there is a chance that you won't be approved to foster care. It all depends on what is determined during the home visit.

2. You Will Need Space

In many cases when you bring a foster child in your home there will be regulations about the rooms that they can sleep in. Many states have regulations about how big the room must be and if they can share with other children and children of opposite gender. If this is problematic it might affect how many children you can get as well as if you can get boys or girls.

Second, in those bedrooms, you might want to start looking for furniture. You will need to have a bed for the child. If the child is under a certain age they will need a crib or a bed with a rail. You may not be able to put them on a bunk bed, so make sure that you understand age restrictions and bedding before you purchase any furniture.

3. Can You Transport The Child To Their School and Activities

Since these foster children are pulled out of their current life and placed in a new one, they request the school-aged children stay at their same school. This means that you may be responsible for driving them to and from their school each day, as well as other activities that they have. In order to be approved for foster parenting, you will need to prove that you can do this.

As you can see, these are just a couple things that you need to do to prepare to be a foster parent. To learn more about the process, contact a company like Kids Count Too.
